Why are you using the iPad and exactly how are you using it?
The band is using iPads on stage so we can tweak our monitor sound on our own. Since we're using in-ear system, it's by far the best solution for me. I've been willing to find a solution to be able to do so for years with a real mixer, but it was too complicated to realize, especially on flying gigs for instance... Finally the best solution presented itself with the iPads... Nowadays, I even use it in my cover band to play backtracks, click tracks, and eventually as sheet music/lyrics display.
What is unique and convenient about TheGigEasy mount?
After searching the internet for mounting solutions, I came across TheGigEasy site. It was definitely the best system for me as a drummer. Very easily mountable on a regular microphone or even on a cymbal stand, it allows me to have my iPad reachable at all time while playing, and of course the possibility to go from landscape to portrait view by just spinning it makes it even better...

This is simply what I wanted since the first day I've started using my iPad as a professional music tool. Having an iPad without TheGigEasy mounting system is like going to a gourmet restaurant without silverware :)

Considering the fact that I'm playing on the side of the stage with my iPad's back facing the audience, everyone can clearly see it. Therefore I get a lot of questions from people and local technicians about it. Everyone seems to be amazed by it and I think this is going to be something that musicians will use more and more in the future.

He's produced three Grammy Award winning CDs (most recently Randy Brecker's "34th and Lex")[1] and was nominated for Emmy Awards for his composing on the long-running TV shows "One Life to Live" and "As the World Turns". [2]
As a musician, he's played and recorded with artists such as Dave Matthews and Carlos Santana ("Supernatural"), Celine Dion ("Falling Into You" and "These are Special Times"), Michael and Randy Brecker (4 years on the road, 7 CDs), Chaka Khan ("The Woman I Am"), Richard Bona (phenom from Camerooon), Chris Minh Doky, Sadao Watanabe, Grover Washington, Jr., Till Brönner ("Midnight") and dozens of other top artists. His discography includes more than 100 CDs as a producer or musician,[3] and he has hundreds of compositions for film and TV playing on everything from nature documentaries to feature films to TV reality shows and some of TV's longest-running series.

LOVELAND - A team of Loveland-based engineers and inventors is seeking to capitalize on the emerging Apple iPad market. TheGigEasy is a startup company composed of three professional musicians - Darren Kramer, Brent Smith and Brian Monroney - who came up with the idea of creating Apple iPad mounts that attach to a microphone stand or music stand, enabling a performer to have trouble-free access to information onstage. They pitched their idea to local product development consultant Eric Krug of Krug Consulting, who came up with the first mount design last July.
“It all started in Eric’s shop and looked like Russian Sputnik technology, but we were thrilled with his first prototype design,” said Monroney.
“They were just speechless,” said Krug, savoring that moment of possibly capturing lightning in a bottle. With the first prototype in hand, Krug directed TheGigEasy crew to Steve Tungesvick, owner and president of Soft Touch Manufacturing in Loveland.
Since last summer, Tungesvick’s operation has served as the production brawn, with the first mount order shipped out in December 2010. “With my design experience, Steve’s quality manufacturing and TheGigEasy’s ideas, its kind of a dream team,” said Krug. “We’ve designed mounts that pivot 360 degrees and are extremely durable.” Added Tungesvick, “The Three Amigos invested in us to make their parts, and I think it’s going to blow up.”

Though TheGigEasy mount was designed initially for musicians, the company hopes to capture other markets as well. “As musicians, we went after the music business first,” said Kramer. “it’s become apparent that our products have potential application to a wide array of other fields and products as well, such as education, medical, fitness, and the mobility market, to name a few.” Notable performers have taken notice of the mounts’ potential, such as the recently reunited ‘’80s rock band The Cars. Kramer smiled and said, “We got an order from a Richard Ocasek in NYC, and we thought, ‘Hey, isn’t that The Cars lead singer?’” Progressive metal band Dream Theater and comedian and bluegrass musician Steve Martin have recently performed using TheGigEasy mounts, adding to the company’s name recognition and momentum.
At the company’s website www.thegigeasy.com, Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess is cited as saying: “TheGigEasy iPad mounting system has worked out beautifully for me. Recently I've had some high profile performance speaking engagements, like when I appeared as a keynote speaker at the MacWorld convention with two iPads in hand! The system is steady and secure and I would recommend TheGigEasy as a great solution to anyone using the iPad in a serious performance situation. It's awesome!” Smith senses the company’s potential is only beginning to manifest itself. “We’re hoping to get a foot in the door of six or seven large markets, such as touring acts and Broadway shows, but the only thing we’re missing right now is publicity,” he said. But it appears TheGigEasy is well on its way to recognition, as USA Today recognized their mounts as some of the “hottest products” at the National Association of Music Merchants, the world’s second largest music convention held last January. The company has already shipped products as far away as Norway, Australia, Israel and Luxembourg. With sales doubling each month, Krug believes TheGigEasy trio’s success is a foregone conclusion. “The mount designs are sexy, it’s durable, and with so many applications, the market is potentially huge,” Krug said. “There are also low-cost, which give them gift appeal, since they not only can be used onstage, but in cars, boats, planes or anywhere else you can think of mounting an iPad.” A palpable sense of excitement surrounds the team. “We are just musicians, and without Steve and Eric, none of this is possible,” said Monroney, “and with 20 million iPads already out there, the sky’s the limit.”

Ed Calle is a world-class saxophonist who has recorded and performed around the world with such artists as Gloria Estefan, Julio Iglesias, Michael Bolton, Bob James, Bobby Caldwell, Rhianna, Extreme, and Vanessa Williams. He appears on Grammy-award-winning albums by Frank Sinatra, Vicky Carr, Arturo Sandoval, and Jon Secada, as well as on numerous television and motion picture soundtracks. Among his many solo recordings, Ed Calle Plays Santana garnered a Latin Grammy Award nomination in 2005. His latest release In the Zone (2006) features original compositions and jazz standards and earned a Latin Grammy nomination in 2007. Besides being an internationally acclaimed jazz performer and prolific composer and arranger, Calle is in great demand as a jazz clinician and enjoys working with students. He recently began new duties as Chairman of Arts and Philosophy Miami Dade College North Campus.

C’mon, you remember the song from Sesame Street...
”One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn’t belong...”
Although it was not one of the pieces played Monday night by the H2 Big Band at the University of Denver, it is an appropriate song title that comes to mind when seeing one lonely iPad within a sea of traditional music stands.
In this scenario, however, it can be argued that “one of these things just does belong” as digital pdf readers are becoming the wave of the future with the advent of the iPad and other tablet devices. Musician/Actor Harry Connick Jr. realized this technology was imminent even back in 2002 when he was granted a patent for a “system and method for coordinating music display among players in an orchestra”. His invention involves an electronic screen that shows musician their sheet music while they’re playing - a high-tech version of traditional sheet paper, normally held up by a propped folding music stand. Well, the future is here, the technology is here, and TheGigEasy is part of the equation.
Bass Trombonist Gary Mayne knows this and was an early adopter of TheGigEasy Mic Stand Mount in the fall of 2010 and continues to use his iPad music stand on virtually all of his freelance gigs:

HP announced that the Wi-Fi version of HP TouchPad will be available in the United States on July 1. HP's first webOS tablet will be available in the United Kingdom, Ireland, France and Germany a few days later and in Canada in mid-July, with availability scheduled to follow later this year in Italy and Spain, as well as in Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Singapore.

TouchPad brings a 9.7, 1024 x 768 pixel display along with a 1.3 megapixel webcam with video calling, b/g/n WiFi, 16/32 GB of storage running on a dual core 1.2 GHz Snapdragon CPU. It weighs in at 1.6 pounds and is 13.7mm thick.
Optional accessories for HP TouchPad include the HP Touchstone Charging Dock, the HP TouchPad Wireless Keyboard and the HP TouchPad Case (sold separately).
U.S. retailers and commercial resellers for HP TouchPad will include Best Buy, Staples, Office Depot, Walmart, Sam's Club, OfficeMax, Amazon.com, Fry's, Microcenter, other leading local and regional retailers, and HP's online stores. Customarily, an aircraft cockpit would contain a collection of paper flight manuals typically weighing around forty pounds, that encompass everything from log books to the operating manual. However, with the latest FAA authorization, they could all be replaced by a one and a half pound iPad.
The first carrier to gain such approval was Alaska Airlines back in May. Their pilots were given permission to use the iPad to consult digital flight, systems and performance manuals. The move cut around 25 pounds of paper for each flight bag.
Jim Freeman, who works both as a pilot and the director of flight standards at Alaska Airlines said “the iPad allows pilots to quickly and nimbly access information,” adding that “when you need to a make a decision in the cockpit, three to four minutes fumbling with paper is an eternity.”
The new e-manuals on the iPad are also much easier to maneuver than before as a result of the added hyperlinks and color graphics, while updating the manuals is also a far simpler process. Instead of substituting old pages for new pages, the manual is updated automatically.
Interestingly, the transition to iPad is thought to reduce healthcare costs that come about from shoulder and back injuries that are tied to carrying the cumbersome flight bags. David Clark, a pilot the manager of the connected aircraft program at American Airlines told the New York Times, “Cockpits are small, and lifting that thing up and over your seat causes damage, particularly when you consider a lot of pilots are over 40.”
Further still, Alaska Airlines has plans in place to add more applications including aeronautical maps and charts. Be that as it may, they will still need to consult the FAA for approval.
The FAA’s deputy director of flight standards said that “each airline must submit a unique proposal on how they want to use the iPad and prove that both the device and software application are safe and effective for that proposed use.” In one instance, Executive Jet Management proved the iPad was safe by putting it through rapid decompression at 51,000 feet. By contrast, private and corporate pilots are not required to go though the vigorous approval process as they are deemed responsible for deciding what is safe for use in their own cockpit.
Jack Long, a pilot for more than 30 years who flies for business and pleasure, told the Times, “I didn’t ease into using the iPad, I jumped.” He was able to scrap his $1,414 a year subscriptions to paper maps and charts, and replace them with the same maps and charts but sent to his two iPads, costing only $150 a year. He also stores digital versions of his aircraft, operating manuals, equipment and a copy of F.A.A. rules and regulations.
The iPad itself possesses greater than 250 aviation apps. The top grossing of them all is ’ForeFlight’ which can administer maps, aeronautical charts and weather while assisting the pilots with planning flight plans. On top of that, the tablet has a ten-hour battery allowing it to cope with all US domestic flights without the need for recharging.
The iPad was announced in January 2010 and released in April the same year. As of June 6 2011, Apple has sold 25 million worldwide.

I know, in an article otherwise chock-full of apps costing just a few dollars and interfaces costing $70 or less, it can be jarring to see a price tag like this on something as seemingly simple as an iPad stand. You might find yourself scratching your head and asking yourself, "What could possibly make an iPad stand worth this much money?"
I've had a chance to work with a number of iPad stands from different makers, and there are some good ones and some not-so-good ones. Some are solidly made but not as flexible as you might like them to be - perhaps they're not easy to position, or it's difficult to put the iPad in or take it out - and some are just plain cheap, dropping your iPad or letting it rattle around. And with the advent of the iPad 2, which is substantially thinner than the original, many stands just plain don't fit any more.
And then there's TheGigEasy. How does it differ from the competition? Well, where do I start...it uses four spring-loaded arms that hug the iPad tightly, making it exceptionally easy to place and remove while holding it rock-steady. It can be purchased with a variety of stand mount options, everything from a mic boom arm to a conventional Manhasset music stand to a VESA arm mount like those used for swivelling monitors. It can be turned to any position, landscape or portrait, with a solidly detented 'click' at each position and a full 360 degrees of rotation.
If you have an iPad 2, converting TheGigEasy to hold it is as simple as attaching four self-adhesive rubber bumper pads, which come free with the unit, and I’m told that a special iPad 2 version offering full access to both camera lenses will ship in July.
You wouldn't trust a thousand-dollar guitar to a cheaply-made stand, or put your best vintage tube mic on a flimsy mic boom you got in the bargain bin, would you? Well, you might...and you might curse the day you did when your precious investment ends up slipping, sagging, or just plain falling to the floor. Saving a few dollars on a cheap iPad stand is, in my opinion, a false economy. I've been living with TheGigEasy for several weeks now, using it in my studio as I play guitar through my iPad, play virtual instruments on it, and set it up for cue sheets when I do my radio show, and it's been an utter delight. I'm going to pay to keep it now that this review is over. I wouldn't trust my iPad to anything else.

As Brent Smith walks into The Johnstown Breeze office, his two business partners follow him boisterously, as all three ooze with excitement. They are equipped with a trombone, packages, an iPad, and the trio’s new invention, TheGigEasy®. Smith and his two partners, Brian Monroney and Darren Kramer, have in common a love of music. Smith, a resident of Johnstown for more than 15 years, has been playing the trombone since he attended college at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

that allows musicians to attach their iPads to microphone or music stands,
and other products, for hands-free playing.
Monroney and Kramer are both professional musicians, and their musical careers have allowed them to play around the world. When bouncing from one gig to another, Smith and his partners began to tire of carrying around hundreds of loose sheets of sheet music. To illustrate, Kramer picks up a three-inch thick binder and says, “I have one of these full of music for every different group I play with.” So the three musicians, like many folks these day, went digital. Each member has an iPad with the majority of their sheet music inside. No more lugging around binders of loose papers. But as Smith and his partners followed the digital trend, there was still a problem. Smith wondered what he was going to use to hold his iPad in front of him when playing a gig. He came up with the idea for an iPad music stand. As many know, technology moves quickly these days and Smith acted accordingly. He got in touch with some fellow musicians he knew across the Front Range, who by day are engineers. After kicking around the basic idea of an iPad music stand, he began to assemble his trio. Kramer was a no-brainer. Smith and Kramer date back all the way to their high school days at Longmont High School. And through their musical connections, Monroney joined the crew. “I think that if you believe in something you have to go for it,” said Smith. About a year ago, the three began working together. Through music and innovation, a prototype of TheGigEasy was created. TheGigEasy grips the iPad with four spring-loaded arms that secure it to the iPad and it has the ability to rotate 360 degrees. But as the trio has began to notice, once they have one idea, a shower of new ones accompany it. “Once we get one thing crossed off our to-do list, six more things get added to the bottom of it,” said Smith. TheGigEasy launched off better than the trio could have dreamed. Only a year after the three first came together, it has over eight products that mount to a variety of mic and music stands, partnering companies, and raving musicians. The summer festival season is in full swing and for those of you musicians who play outdoor gigs, you know that the weather - particularly the wind - plays a big part in your performance and personal enjoyment. You know the scene...music flies around the stage as musicians, and even audience members, scramble to stomp on random blowing pieces of paper. Sure, this frantic scene is amusing at times, but the wind is an outdoor reality that certainly doesn’t encourage musicianship or peace of mind. Clothes pins do help keep the pages on the music stand, but this is certainly a nuisance when it comes to turning pages or changing songs, and it is rarely a guaranteed solution. I personally have had a page, or an entire chart, blow away when I’m actually repositioning the clothes pins, large clips or 8x11 plexiglass sheets. Plus, even if the music is in those protective sleeves within a binder, the pages still seem to “shake, rattle and roll” most of the time. And, as you know, most binder books are large, heavy and bulky which tend to cause problems with a music stand in high wind.

TheGigEasy blows the iKlip away! In January, I bought an iKlip to hold my wife’s original iPad during a gig so I could use OnSong. The iKlip worked ok. I paid $40 for the iKlip which felt like a lot for a predominately plastic piece. My assessment fo the iKlip was “ok, considering I didn’t know of any other options.” Once I gog my iPad 2, I was disappointed that I t didn’t really fit the iKlip. Like an idiot, I tried to rg up a rubber band strap to hold in the iPad 2. Tried it at one practice. It worked ok for an hour then suddenly the iPad 2 slipped through the bottom and fell to the floor. Now I have a small dent on the corner where it hit the mic stand. Totally my mistake so I don’t blame iKlip but I was disappointed that after emailing every week since I bought the iPad 2, they had no date for an updated iKlip. Well, as they drug their feet, I found something much much better. On Thursday I opened the wallet and ordered TheGigEasy. It arrived two days later. Extremely well made and a much superior design to the iKlip. You invested in your iPad. Consider investing in the holder. I’m glad I did. I have so much confidence in this product, I think I’ll sell the iKlip and buy a second TheGigEasy for my wife’s iPad.

So VERY good. They provided rubber pads to attach to the clip in you have an iPad 2. Are you experiencing sluggish page turns on your iPad, or has your iPad suddenly stopped responding to your BT-105's page turn commands altogether? Many folks don't realize that they may simply have too many apps open at the same time. While the iPad does have multitasking capabilities, it also has very limited memory resources that can get easily overwhelmed. Here's a quick video tutorial on how to view all your open apps and close them (see below). I’ve received numerous inquiries over the past several months regarding pdf charts on the iPad. This blog is an attempt to answer the top three questions which I continually get asked while using my iPad on freelance gigs.
1. Is a PDF chart on the iPad big enough to read?
2. How long does it take to scan several charts

1. Is a PDF chart on the iPad big enough to read?
Yes! Although the iPad screen is about 20-30% smaller than a standard piece of paper (5.75x7.75 vs. 8.5x11), it is quite legible and crystal clear due to the LED backlighting. I’m aware that some people disagree, but I certainly have had no problems reading my ipad on gigs. In fact, you should know that I am almost 42 yrs old, 6’5”” and wear glasses, yet I genuinely prefer reading music on the iPad vs. standard music for two reasons: 1. LED backlighting is quite superior to a standard stand light which also requires finding an outlet (and sometimes an extension cord!) 2. Using TheGigEasy Mic Stand Mount Kit allows me to not only get the iPad closer to my eyes than a standard music stand, the mount also allows quick easy rotation to Landscape View so I can virtually double the size of the notes or chord changes when I need it. Yes, I can only read about four staves before having to scroll down the page, but that is easily handled by my AirTurn Hands Free Page Turner which you can learn more about HERE. Also, please know I use a variety of PDF reader apps and will do a special blog regarding that topic at a later time.

2. How long does it take to scan several charts?
Just last week I finally scanned 64 charts for the salsa band I play with, and I must admit I was dreading it as the book is a mess and contains all different size paper. Most charts are torn, ripped and smudged from trombone drizzle (occupational hazard!). Therefore, I knew I had to scan each page by hand, but I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly I accomplished the process:
