New Artist Interview: Pain of Salvation
“The system works very good for me I have to say. I've been longing for ages to be able to do my monitor sound from the kit so I couldn't be happier :)” Leo Margarit • Drummer for Pain of Salvation

Interview with Pain of Salvation drummer Leo Margarit (12.15.11)
Why are you using the iPad and exactly how are you using it?
The band is using iPads on stage so we can tweak our monitor sound on our own. Since we're using in-ear system, it's by far the best solution for me. I've been willing to find a solution to be able to do so for years with a real mixer, but it was too complicated to realize, especially on flying gigs for instance... Finally the best solution presented itself with the iPads... Nowadays, I even use it in my cover band to play backtracks, click tracks, and eventually as sheet music/lyrics display.
What is unique and convenient about TheGigEasy mount?
After searching the internet for mounting solutions, I came across TheGigEasy site. It was definitely the best system for me as a drummer. Very easily mountable on a regular microphone or even on a cymbal stand, it allows me to have my iPad reachable at all time while playing, and of course the possibility to go from landscape to portrait view by just spinning it makes it even better...
How has the iPad/TheGigEasy changed the way you perform?
This is simply what I wanted since the first day I've started using my iPad as a professional music tool. Having an iPad without TheGigEasy mounting system is like going to a gourmet restaurant without silverware :)
Have the audience reacted at all to this new technology onstage?
Considering the fact that I'm playing on the side of the stage with my iPad's back facing the audience, everyone can clearly see it. Therefore I get a lot of questions from people and local technicians about it. Everyone seems to be amazed by it and I think this is going to be something that musicians will use more and more in the future.

(We are musicians who simply love the functionality and convenience of creating and recording music on an Apple Macintosh computer. We have been dedicated Mac users since way back before it was cool or popular. In fact, we had to mail order nearly everything because no physical stores actually carried any Apple products! Then, we were on a European tour with singer Tom Jones in 2000 and saw iPod posters plastered all over the place and knew something was changing. Things sure have come a long way. Good Job, Steve!)

"TheGigEasy iPad mounting system has worked out beautifully for me. Recently I've had some high profile performance speaking engagements, like when I appeared as a keynote speaker at the MacWorld convention with two iPads in hand! The system is steady and secure and I would recommend TheGigEasy as a great solution to anyone using the iPad in a serious performance situation. It's awesome!"

Featured App: OnSong
OnSong is designed for musicians who need to display chord sheets, and is popular with cover bands and worship musicians. It can import lyrics and chords from a multitude of sources including but not limited to PDF, Word, Pages, and the popular ChordPro file format. OnSong allows easy entry of chord sheets directly in the app, quick organization of songs into sets, transposition on the fly and a variety of innovative scrolling features. The latter function is great for a singer to display lyrics which will autoscroll based on a preset speed; no interaction is required once the song starts.
OnSong supports the AirTurn BT-105 BlueTooth hands free page turner, which can be configured in various ways to control page turns and scrolling. Another cool BlueTooth feature in OnSong is the sharing of chord sheets with fellow musicians.
Other features include complete control of text appearance (fonts, color, etc), VGA output to a monitor or projector, quick import of chord sheets from the internet, control of audio playback from your iTunes library, and a built-in metronome. OnSong is a powerful tool for performing musicians and is available for only $4.99 in from the App Store.

Product Review: Recording Magazine

Recording Magazine / July 2011 Issue / Page 42
Review by Mike Metlay
TheGigEasy
$79 to $99; www.thegigeasy.com
I know, in an article otherwise chock-full of apps costing just a few dollars and interfaces costing $70 or less, it can be jarring to see a price tag like this on something as seemingly simple as an iPad stand. You might find yourself scratching your head and asking yourself, "What could possibly make an iPad stand worth this much money?"
I've had a chance to work with a number of iPad stands from different makers, and there are some good ones and some not-so-good ones. Some are solidly made but not as flexible as you might like them to be - perhaps they're not easy to position, or it's difficult to put the iPad in or take it out - and some are just plain cheap, dropping your iPad or letting it rattle around. And with the advent of the iPad 2, which is substantially thinner than the original, many stands just plain don't fit any more.
And then there's TheGigEasy. How does it differ from the competition? Well, where do I start...it uses four spring-loaded arms that hug the iPad tightly, making it exceptionally easy to place and remove while holding it rock-steady. It can be purchased with a variety of stand mount options, everything from a mic boom arm to a conventional Manhasset music stand to a VESA arm mount like those used for swivelling monitors. It can be turned to any position, landscape or portrait, with a solidly detented 'click' at each position and a full 360 degrees of rotation.

If you have an iPad 2, converting TheGigEasy to hold it is as simple as attaching four self-adhesive rubber bumper pads, which come free with the unit, and I’m told that a special iPad 2 version offering full access to both camera lenses will ship in July.
You wouldn't trust a thousand-dollar guitar to a cheaply-made stand, or put your best vintage tube mic on a flimsy mic boom you got in the bargain bin, would you? Well, you might...and you might curse the day you did when your precious investment ends up slipping, sagging, or just plain falling to the floor. Saving a few dollars on a cheap iPad stand is, in my opinion, a false economy. I've been living with TheGigEasy for several weeks now, using it in my studio as I play guitar through my iPad, play virtual instruments on it, and set it up for cue sheets when I do my radio show, and it's been an utter delight. I'm going to pay to keep it now that this review is over. I wouldn't trust my iPad to anything else.

Outdoor Gigs: Traditional Sheet Music vs. Digital PDF Files
So what is the solution? Is there one??? Yes. In fact, there are three...and just for fun I’m listing them “Jeopardy” style.

CLUE: This revolutionary computing device, launched in 2010, allows musicians to view their traditional sheet music and lyric sheets as digital PDF files

ANSWER (in the form of a question): What is an iPad?
Consider using the iPad as a pdf library for all of your music...for all of your gigs! Simply attach your iPad to your computer and use iTunes to import all your scanned pdf charts or lyrics. It’s quick, easy, and very convenient. It’s a great solution that allows you to blow away the audience with your music, while not having your music blown away by the wind! Not only will your charts be “virtual”, but they will be backed up on your iPad and computer. This is just one of many reasons the iPad is a great investment for any musician.
CATEGORY: Sheet Music vs. Digital Music for $89
CLUE: How do you securely mount an iPad for convenient viewing?

ANSWER: What is TheGigEasy?
This unique and versatile iPad mount is available with many attachment options. For musicians (especially players performing at outdoor festivals),
the Mic Stand Mount Kit or Mic Stand Mount Extension Arm Kit are ideal iPad mounts as they attach to any standard microphone stand. (I suggest using one provided by the venue so you don’t have to carry it!) TheGigEasy cradles the iPad with four patent-pending spring-loaded arms while allowing full 360 degrees of rotation easily adjusted with one hand!
CATEGORY: Sheet Music vs. Digital Music for $129.95
CLUE: How do you turn pages on the iPad if your instrument requires use of both hands?

ANSWER: What is the AirTurn “Hands Free Page Turner”?
This amazing Bluetooth wireless device allows hands free page turning with a simple foot pedal board. Simply connect the unit by syncing with your iPad Bluetooth settings and then to the network settings in most any pdf reader app (AirTurn now supports over 40 apps!). Keep in mind that even if the pedal is connected, you can still always turn pages by simply touching or swiping the screen with your finger. AirTurn allows you to use both options at anytime for ultimate convenience!
CATEGORY: Sheet Music vs. Digital Music for the “Daily Double”
CLUE: The place you go to eliminate the need for a clothes pins, sheet music, music book, music stand, and stand light!

What Are People Saying About TheGigEasy?
I already own two of your mounts and I'm buying a third for my friend. Thanks for such a great product! - Bob Rice
Awesome work with TheGigEasy - I think DJ Richie Hawtin might be mentioning it in his upcoming technology blog feature! :) Speak soon!
- Gareth Williams (aka Raw Hedroom)
I just completed the order :) I'm hoping to use TheGigEasy and AirTurn pedal together for the first time the week of June 12 when I host a week long jazz camp here in Iowa. Also looking forward to using this hip new stuff with the Oasis Quartet! - Dave Camwell
TheGigEasy blows the iKlip away! In January, I bought an iKlip to hold my wife’s original iPad during a gig so I could use OnSong. The iKlip worked ok. I paid $40 for the iKlip which felt like a lot for a predominately plastic piece. My assessment fo the iKlip was “ok, considering I didn’t know of any other options.” Once I gog my iPad 2, I was disappointed that I t didn’t really fit the iKlip. Like an idiot, I tried to rg up a rubber band strap to hold in the iPad 2. Tried it at one practice. It worked ok for an hour then suddenly the iPad 2 slipped through the bottom and fell to the floor. Now I have a small dent on the corner where it hit the mic stand. Totally my mistake so I don’t blame iKlip but I was disappointed that after emailing every week since I bought the iPad 2, they had no date for an updated iKlip. Well, as they drug their feet, I found something much much better. On Thursday I opened the wallet and ordered TheGigEasy. It arrived two days later. Extremely well made and a much superior design to the iKlip. You invested in your iPad. Consider investing in the holder. I’m glad I did. I have so much confidence in this product, I think I’ll sell the iKlip and buy a second TheGigEasy for my wife’s iPad.
- John
I'm working with a Boulder wedding band called Fever that has TheGigEasy...very cool. Now I want one! - Brian McRae
I am totally digging mine! I sent the info on TheGigEasy to Herbie (Hancock) and his tech and I expect they'll explore it when they get ready to start working on the next version of Herbie's road rig. - George Whitty
Nice to see that you're on the cutting edge! I am in Aspen at this moment and typing to you on my iPad! I've been thinking of scanning my quintet music and putting it somewhere accessible, just in case the worst happens on tour. (American Brass Quintet) - John Rojak
I’m all for getting the best products on stage! I know a lot of these products are plastic clips but TheGigEasy is definitely a well-designed product. - Jason Kichline
TheGigEasy locks the iPad into place is very good and the ability to turn landscape/portrait is simply awesome. - Samuelthan
I did a gig tonight in Chicago with Matt Lewis and the Union. They use iPads and TheGigEasy for the entire band. Wish we had foot switches! Matt and his brother Ben are the real deal here. Both are outstanding jazz musicians and have been part of the Lt. Dan Band (Gary Sinise...of Forest Gump and CSI NY) - Rick Jordan
This looks like an excellent product. - Dennis DeSantis of Ableton
I can testify TheGigEasy is a fantastic product, with iPad2 and OnSong app I’m sure our audience will agree that having lyrics in front of me is now cool, where previously the book and stand were frowned upon. - Very Happy Vocalist
I decided after much research to get TheGigEasy. I received it and wow am I impressed. It holds my iPad securely...no way is this thing falling out. Sturdy construction. Allows for any angle rotating from portrait to landscape. This is important because I’m attaching the mic boom to my keyboard stand so it will be coming up at an angle. No worries with TheGigEasy. So VERY good. They provided rubber pads to attach to the clip in you have an iPad 2. I did talk to them and they are going to offer one (mount) specifically for iPad 2 soon...due to the fact that it IS thinner. The temporary solution seems like it would work though. WIth OnSong, TheGigEasy and Standtastic...my keyboard and iPad should appear to just about float! Much easier on the eyes too! - Matt

Ultimate Convenience Using PDF Music Readers on iPad

I’ve received numerous inquiries over the past several months regarding pdf charts on the iPad. This blog is an attempt to answer the top three questions which I continually get asked while using my iPad on freelance gigs.
1. Is a PDF chart on the iPad big enough to read?
2. How long does it take to scan several charts
3. How do you upload PDF charts to the iPad? (...and how do you turn pages while playing?) Quick answer: AirTurn Hands Free Page Turner

1. Is a PDF chart on the iPad big enough to read?
Yes! Although the iPad screen is about 20-30% smaller than a standard piece of paper (5.75x7.75 vs. 8.5x11), it is quite legible and crystal clear due to the LED backlighting. I’m aware that some people disagree, but I certainly have had no problems reading my ipad on gigs. In fact, you should know that I am almost 42 yrs old, 6’5”” and wear glasses, yet I genuinely prefer reading music on the iPad vs. standard music for two reasons: 1. LED backlighting is quite superior to a standard stand light which also requires finding an outlet (and sometimes an extension cord!) 2. Using TheGigEasy Mic Stand Mount Kit allows me to not only get the iPad closer to my eyes than a standard music stand, the mount also allows quick easy rotation to Landscape View so I can virtually double the size of the notes or chord changes when I need it. Yes, I can only read about four staves before having to scroll down the page, but that is easily handled by my AirTurn Hands Free Page Turner which you can learn more about HERE. Also, please know I use a variety of PDF reader apps and will do a special blog regarding that topic at a later time.

2. How long does it take to scan several charts?
Just last week I finally scanned 64 charts for the salsa band I play with, and I must admit I was dreading it as the book is a mess and contains all different size paper. Most charts are torn, ripped and smudged from trombone drizzle (occupational hazard!). Therefore, I knew I had to scan each page by hand, but I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly I accomplished the process:
TOTAL TIME 1:45
Copy/Scan 60min
Rename Files 30min
Upload/Test 15min
Not a bad time investment considering the convenience for all future gigs:

NEW HI-TECH FREELANCE EQUIPMENT - All fits easily in a small bag or backpack
iPad - Access your entire library alphabetically at the touch of a button. You can also create set lists! Plus...smaller size = more room on stage for playing and hearing monitor.
TheGigEasy Mic Stand Mount Kit - Simply remove mic and mic clip from standard mic stand at the venue.
AirTurn BT-105 Foot Switches - Wireless Hands Free Page Turning via Bluetooth.
DPA Clip On Mic for Brass - Better quality sound and more versatility using no mic stand on stage, esp for my trombone slide.
...then I use the unnecessary mic stand for my "digital iPad music stand".

TRADITIONAL FREELANCE EQUIPMENT - All hands full and often bumping into walls and people en route to venue stage
Bulky Music Book
Shuffling thru ALL charts of loose pages to find just ONE!
Music Stand
Stand Light - need to find outlet and perhaps bring ext cord.
Mic & Mic Stand
Clothes Pins for Loose Pages (outdoor summer gigs)

3. How do you upload PDF charts to the iPad?
from the AirTurn website...
For folks who are new to reading music on a computer, getting sheet music files into the iPad can seem like a daunting task. This tutorial shows how to add sheet music PDF files to iPad sheet music and document apps like forScore, MusicReader, unrealBook, DeepDish GigBook, NextPage, OnSong, and many others through iTune's built in File Sharing feature. This tutorial also goes over how to move files from the iPad to your computer, as well as deleting files from within specific iPad apps.
